MUSIC VIDEO: PLANNING AGAIN

Today my friend and group member Zamara and I met at her house to discuss ideas for this new idea that we came up with for the music video.

The music video is based on the cover by Sunday Girl of Where is my mind which is originally by Pixies. The idea for the music video is to show a girl who is hallucinating. This idea goes very well with the lyrics of the song. The plan is to make an abstract music video because as I said the idea is to show a girl who is hallucinating and hallucinations are not supposed to make any sense. This gives us a chance to put a lot of creativity in our music video.

Inspiration for music video:
Up&Up - Coldplay

Riptide - Vance Joy

Young - The Paper Kites

PROJECT: WELCOME'16

At the start of the new academic year, the graduating class (A2) throws a welcome party for the new batch of students (AS), in which they prepare dances, performances, videos etc for the new students. Every year students of A2 media class make a short film as their contribution to the welcome party. The most famous genre of the short film in the previous years has been Horror, where our school is shown as a haunted place, and this has somewhat become a ritual among media students.

As we're the graduating media class, my friends and I decided to add our own twist to this ritual. We decided to make a short film of a hybrid genre; horror-comedy. We took inspiration from Scary Movie which is a parody of the horror, slasher, and mystery film genres. We incorporated the local humor (like songs by a singer called Taher Shah, which went viral across the nation due to their comedic nature.) in our video so everyone can easily relate to it.

Here's the link to our short film: Trapped

As these projects are just building blocks towards our Advanced Portfolio, we followed the same procedures of pre-production as we would for our final project. First we all came up with an idea, then we made a detailed storyboard, decided on the location (in school), held auditions for the actors, and collected the props. The day for the shoot was finalized and the school administration was informed beforehand. Due to our proper planning, the production phase went smoothly. It taught me the value of research and planning and how it can affect your production. This valuable lesson will help me in my final project, as I can prevent many mishaps from happening on set.

I acted as a Cinematographer along with Awais Buriro, and so I got hands-on experience with the camera. We used a Canon 6D, stabilizer, and tripod. I got to know what camera settings work well for a dark lit scenes.  I got to know more about camera angles and composition and how they represent what they represent. And I learned how different equipment helps refine a shot.

The Post-Production phase was informative too and helped develop my editing skills as the film required both fast paced and slow paced editing. I learned how background music helps elevate the action and create tension.

Overall, this was a very informative and fun experience. It helped refine my thought process, skills, and my ability to make creative decisions. So now hopefully my input in the music video will result in a much better outcome.

MUSIC VIDEO: SETBACK

Since there are a lot of us, our schedules couldn't match. Our plan was to get done with the shoot before our Mid term exams because during that shooting would be difficult since we all have different subjects and we won't be free at the same time. Our actors were busy in those days before the mid term. The only option left was to start the shooting AFTER the exams; the end of December. This was a risky thing to do as the music video we planned had quite a complex narrative and required a lot of work to be done on After Effects which takes a lot of time.
Since we all weren't getting free at the same time and we couldn't postpone the music video we thought it'd be best to break the group up. Zamara and I have almost the same subjects and we'd be able to co-ordinate properly so we decided to pair up. Awais decided to do his project solo.
Here's to hoping that all goes well!

RESEARCH AND PLANNING: PROPS

We have already started collecting the props for the music video:
Lemon malt bottles to show beer bottles
Shot glasses
Gun
Photo frames

I looked up tutorials on youtube on how to make prosthetic cuts with just glue, tissue, and makeup. I also learned how to make fake blood using just water, sugar. cocoa powder and red+green food colors. All of which we'll be using on our actors.

RESEARCH AND PLANNING: STORYBOARD

Actors:
We've made the storyboard for the pre-music video shots and discussed some creative shots for the music video. We had to remove the scene where the girl is hanging from the ceiling fan as it is quite dangerous. Instead we decided to show that she has cut her wrists.

RESEARCH AND PLANNING: MEETINGS

We've been having meetings regularly in school to discuss our plans for the music video.
First we needed a location (a house) that would fit the scenes in order to construct the storyboard.
Luckily one of the actors we chose was willing to let us do the shooting at her house.
She sent us pictures of her living room and bedroom so we can use it as a reference to make the storyboard.

MUSIC VIDEO: IDEA

We've decided to add a short sequence before the actual song starts to help explain our story better. Here's our idea for the music video:

Pre music video: A man is seen passed out on his bed. He wakes up and walks out of his room and sees that the house is a mess; broken glass everywhere and the furniture is turned over. He walks into the living room and as he is in the doorway, he sees his wife hanging from a ceiling fan. The shot cuts to his expressions and from there the song starts.

Music video: For the duration of the first half of the song we plan on showing what exactly happened to lead to this. Our plan is to show that the man was abusive and that his wife got fed up after a fight and committed suicide. The second half of the song shows his regret and how he feels guilty. In the end he ends up killing himself too.

We will start working on the storyboard soon.

MUSIC VIDEO: BRAINSTORMING FOR IDEAS

We had a lot of meetings in school in order to discuss the ideas for the music video. There are so many creative ways to approach a music video that choosing one felt like a difficult task. We all came up with our own ideas and discussed it together so it becomes more refined. I feel like each member of this group has his/her own uniqueness and that shows in the ideas that they put forward. So when someone comes with an idea, we are all able to add our own touch to it till we're all satisfied with it.

I inherently only enjoy listening to slow (and sad) songs and so my ideas were quite dramatic and would need a slow-paced editing. But we were looking for an upbeat song so the editing can be fast paced and also because our target audience (Teenagers) would enjoy it.

Keeping that in mind the song we settled on is Demons by Imagine Dragons. It's an upbeat rock song. The best thing about choosing this song for our music video is that it gives us room to be very creative. We're thinking along the lines of adding a lot of fast cuts and a lot of slow motion too. Lets see what we come up with now.

MUSIC VIDEO: CREW

For my Advanced Portfolio I'll be working in a group which consists of three other members:
- Zamara Mariam
- Rabea Azim
- Awais Buriro

We all have different personalities so I expect our ideas to be very different from each other too. I think this will work out great for the music video as we'll all bring something unique to it. I'll update about our ideas soon!

INTRODUCTION

Hi there! My name is Shiza Binte Waseem, and I'm doing my A Levels in Media Studies from Beaconhouse School System. The purpose of this blog is to document all the creative processes that will lead up to my Advanced Portfolio.  I'll be updating this blog regularly with the progress of my projects (music video, album cover, website), some of my other works, and my experiences as a media student. I hope this journey is just as informative for you as it is for me. STAY TUNED!
